Costa Rica: days 1-5

I recently returned from an amazing volunteer adventure!  I signed up for 2 weeks of Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica with GoEco, a wonderful organization that connects volunteers with deserving projects around the globe.  Here is the link to the Sea Turtle Conservation Project, should you decide you can't live without this experience either.  I was beyond excited for this journey and could not wait to share - below is the start of my daily journal - I had 16 days of incredible adventures, and met friends I'll cherish forever.

<Day 1: I wrote this in the airport before departure> Last night I had a lot of packing and homework to do - I ended up staying up ALL night.  Boy was I tired today!  This morning I flew across the state to visit my family for the day, prior to my departure on the red eye.  It was a great day, just spent hanging out and relaxing.  I got a pedicure with mom and grama, and did a little shopping with my aunt.  Loved spending the day with family.

My family is worried about my traveling alone.  It actually got me a little nervous.  I'm going to take it as a good thing and really be prepared.  I've been so excited about the turtle project that I haven't been as diligent in preparing for travel overseas.  I purchased a Costa Rican Spanish phrase book by Lonely Planet.  The thing I'm most nervous for is communicating - my Spanish is so rusty.  Immersion is the key, and I'm hoping it will be like riding a bike!  Currently just waiting at Gate A8 - ready to get on board so I can SLEEP!  Last night's all nighter is catching up to me :)

Leavin' On a Jet Plane

My bags are packed, and I'll be on my way to Costa Rica in less than 24 hours... just after a fun day with family!  How am I feeling??  {see below}

=D
that's as big as I could make it...

I'll be journaling about the experience while I'm there [shooting for daily], so I can update the blog when I come home.  Access to internet will be limited...and honestly, I just want to enjoy the experience!

Everything is Bigger in Texas

It's true, and I really mean everything.  Cowboy Stadium (aka Jerry World), Homecoming Mums (Google this phenomenon...), high school football stadiums, my family... yeah.  My family in Texas is all SO TALL!!  I had to buy a new pair of shoes with heels so I could be "Texas Size" while I was there :)

My paternal grandparents are from Texas/Oklahoma, and much of the family still lives there.  About 4 years ago, I had the chance to meet some of the family - my grandma's cousin (who is more of a sister to her), and her kids & grandkids.  Earlier this month, I went back with my grandma and aunt to visit again.  I stayed Friday - Monday because I couldn't take more time off work, but they stayed for a week and a half!  I had so much fun hanging out with my {4th & 5th} cousins.  The grandkids (14 & 16) are both competitive swimmers, and in high school.  I spent most of my time with the family, running various errands, helping the 16 year old get ready for her first homecoming dance, going to a high school football game, and a swim meet.  Each day we met up with the whole family for a meal - lunch on day one to facilitate my transfer to the house I'd be staying at, dinner at one of the kids' house on day two, out to dinner for a birthday on day 3, and lunch on day 4 to facilitate my transfer back to the airport!

Japan to Give Away 10,000 Airline Tickets!

Check this out - http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/10-000-free-round-trip-tickets-japan-134142507.html

Wow!!  All I have to say is, "where do I sign up??"  The tourism industry in Japan has been hurting since the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear issue that happened in March.  I've heard it's a beautiful country - a 'must see.'  And I really can't wait to get there!  Coming from a marketing standpoint, this is a fabulous way to get people back to Japan!  And, requiring that participants blog about their fabulous adventure??  GENIUS.

I know I'll be first in line in April if this passes - who is going to be waiting with me?

Where have I been?

It seems appropriate to start this new blog off with where I've been before...  Previously I was doing all my blogging at whitneybryann.livejournal.com.  Then I started a vegan blog (veganizetheworld.blogspot.com), and today I decided to start a blog dedicated to one of my favorite things in the world - TRAVEL!!

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time.  More on travel quotes later - there are a lot of good ones out there!

So - where have I been?
  • US States: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Hawaii and Michigan.
  • Mexico: Puerto Vallarta, San Jose del Cabo, Los Barriles, Algodones
  • Canada: British Columbia and Alberta
  • Australia: Brisbane, Sydney and Uluru
Can you tell I live on the west coast? I'm slowly working my way east, and will one day {hopefully soon} be able to say I've been to all 50 states.  16 down, 34 to go!

Next up - where do I want to go?  easy - EVERYWHERE.  Where am I going next?  Costa Rica, in November!

Where have YOU been?
